How many minutes does it take to measure a life? In Jonathan Larson’s groundbreaking retelling of La Bohème, filmmakers and rock musicians in 1990s New York find inspiration in the tragedy and beauty all around them. Their journey of love and loss is the theme of this musical, one of only five to win both the Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize. Recommended for 13 & up (strong language and adult situations).
May 17 – June 16
Sisters Lenny, Meg and Babe have gathered in Mississippi to celebrate Lenny’s birthday. Their lives have always been a whirlwind of chaos and crisis, and now Babe has just shot her abusive husband the Senator! Beth Henley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning tragic comedy unfolds as the sisters push and pull each other—and us—to a deeper understanding of what it means to be a family. Recommended for 13 & up.
August 16 – September 15
Florence is a neurotic neat freak. Olive is a fun-loving slob. Recently divorced from their husbands, they move in as roommates and start driving each other crazy. Enjoy the laughs as Florence and Olive play poker, do battle, and court the Costazuela brothers. Neil Simon himself updated his classic Tony-winning comedy with a decidedly modern female twist!
October 11 – November 17
Based upon a beloved fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, this new musical tells the magical story of a little brown bird who transforms the entire kingdom of China with just her song. Written by a Bay Area native, this locally grown show had its first workshop at the Frederick L. Chacon Little Theatre in Alameda in 2010, and makes its world premiere at Altarena Playhouse this season. Appropriate for all audiences.
