]]> We’re excited to report that the community cable show Theatre Factory, which takes you “behind the scenes” of local community theater productions, is featuring Altarena’s Man of La Mancha in upcoming episodes!

Host Patty Page talks to director Stewart Lyle, music director Armando Fox, and actor LaMont Ridgell about the theater, the show, its background, and their ideas for the production.

Theatre Factory airs on community access cable channel 27.  The complete schedule of upcoming episodes can be found on the Community Media Center web site.  The episode featuring Altarena’s Man of La Mancha will air on channel 27 at all of the following times:

Richard brings his substantial experience and contacts with elementary and higher education to this [...]]]> We’re thrilled to announce that Richard Robert Bunker has joined Altarena as Director of Education! Richard is a longtime Altarena actor, director (The Nerd, The Foreigner, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), supporter, and lead instructor of the highly successful Summer Theatre Camp program.

Richard brings his substantial experience and contacts with elementary and higher education to this newly-created role at Altarena.  Besides formally assuming responsibility for our existing education and outreach activities, including Summer Theatre Camp and our Production Interns program, Richard will be expanding our education and outreach significantly in the coming months.

“Having acted and directed at Altarena for years, I’m excited about contributing here in a new way,” says Richard. “I’m thankful to [Artistic Director] Fred [Chacon] and to the Board for this opportunity.”

”We‘re very fortunate to be able to welcome such a talented and dedicated artist aboard,” said Fred Chacon, Altarena’s Artistic Director who has worked with Richard on many projects. Patrick Tracy, President of Altarena’s Board of Directors, said Altarena is looking forward to  ”helping Richard develop his plans for outreach to educational institutions, both within the theatrical community and to the community at large.”

ManOfLaManchaWe’re really excited about the five great shows we have lined up for 2010, including the timeless musical Man of La Mancha!  If Gypsy and Chicago were any indication, Man of La Mancha will sell out fast, but as a Subscriber you can reserve early and even get the best seats!

Our season will open with the drama/comedy Bus Stop, and we’ll also feature the classic play Steel Magnolias and the hilarious Sylvia. Rounding out the season is the longest-running off-Broadway musical, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, a wry and witty look at relationships that’s so popular it’s played the world over in 13 languages!

]]> This week’s Alameda Sun reported on the Alameda Community For Kids Awards, honoring Alamedans who have given outstanding service on behalf of the children of our community.

Among those honored was Fred Chacon, director of the drama program at Alameda High School and Artistic Director for Altarena Playhouse. Fred’s dedication to children and education is also apparent in his Altarena activities: his students and recent graduates routinely serve as production interns on Altarena shows, and he organized the very successful Summer Theatre Camp for kids, currently led by Altarena director/actor Richard Bunker.

We’re very fortunate to have someone as talented and dedicated as Fred working for the theater, bringing both art and art education to children and adults through his wide range of activities.

]]> The San Jose Mercury News has a great story about the community leadership of Patrick Kenney, an Altarena Advisory Board member, founder of Cairdea Design (one of our many local merchant partners), and Scoutmaster of Alameda Boy Scout Troop 88, of which he’s been a member for over 25 years. In honor of his parents, Patrick started the Hike For The Cure, which has raised thousands of dollars for cancer research. Altarena is proud to partner with businesses like Cairdea Design, exclusive vendor for all of our publicity and marketing materials, and to have community leaders like Patrick on our Advisory Board.

In addition to the new site being easier to read and navigate, it is also much easier for us to update. This means that we will be able to add fresh news and information about the Altarena on a regular basis. All updates will be posted to our homepage just below the current show information. You can also click on any of the “Recent Posts” links in the sidebar to the left.

Even though a lot of work has gone into the new site, there’s still much work left to do. We have a lot of archival information about past shows and Altarena history which we’ll be adding to the site in the weeks and months to come. We’ll also be announcing our 2008 season soon, and will add information about the very exciting line-up of shows we have planned.
