Altarena Playhouse is holding auditions for Steel Magnolias,a poignant and humorous look at life as experienced by a handful of women in the deep South, and I Love You,  You’re Perfect, Now Change, a modern musical comedy about relationships.  Non-AEA, stipend offered.

Auditions, callbacks, rehearsals and performances are at Altarena Playhouse, 1409 High St., Alameda, accessible by public transportation.

Auditions: by appointment Monday May 17 & Tuesday May 18 from 7:00 to 10:00 pm.

Callbacks Wednesday, May 19, 7:00-9:00.

Rehearsals begin May 24.

Performances July 9-August 8, Fri. & Sat. 8pm, Sundays 2pm, Thursday July 29 & Aug 5 only at 8pm.

Characters:

Truvy Jones  (30’s-40’s). The wise-cracking owner of the beauty shop.
Annelle Dupuy-Desoto  (18-30). Truvy’s assistant. Changes from meek to wild to religious during the play.
Clairee Belcher  (50’s-60’s) Widow of the former mayor, a wealthy Grande Dame.
M’lynn Eatenton-Latcherie  (40’s-50’s) Shelby’s mother, a socially prominent career woman. Strong and motherly.
Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie  (25) Strong willed, passionate. Prettiest girl in town.
Ouiser Boudreaux  (50’s-60’s) Wealthy curmudgeon. Acerbic but lovable.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change (Dir. Noah Haydon)

Music by Jimmy Roberts, book & lyrics by Joe DiPietro, directed by Noah Haydon.  3 Men, 3 Women (20-45) Auditions are March 22 and  23 from 7-10 with callbacks on March 24 at 7pm; Looking for great actor/singers with good comedic skills. Some movement skills required as well. Non-AEA, stipend. Please prepare a 16 bar cut of an uptempo song and 16 bar cut of a ballad. Also prepare a good joke to tell. Small movement audition after singing. Performances September 17 – Oct.23.  Auditions will be  at Altarena Playhouse, 1409 High St, Alameda. R&B Cellars

Local Alameda winemaker Kevin Brown and his wife Barbara, proprietors of R&B Cellars (whose lively wines you’ve tasted if you have attended any Altarena opening night receptions or our Fundraiser), were featured this weekend in the San Francsico Chronicle! We’re proud of our partnerships with local businesses, and thrilled that Kevin and Barbara’s family-owned winery is getting much-deserved recognition!

(If you haven’t tried their wines, you owe it to yourself to do so…we feature them at all Altarena events!)

Altarena is proud to offer your budding young actor or actress an amazing theatre summer camp experience—not just a chance to perform, but a chance to be taught by a professional Actor and Director, Alameda’s own Richard Robert Bunker.  Altarena Theater Camp will focus on beginning and intermediate mastery of theater skills:

Stage blocking • Voice/stage diction • Theatre games • Auditions for commercials • Stage combat • Creativity • Ensemble work • Lighting • Directing • Movement • Improvisation • Masks • Basic costume design • Scene work • and more!

Held at the conveniently-located Altarena Playhouse in central Alameda, each two-week session meets Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm.

On the last day of each session at 2pm, the campers will present a family-friendly play showcasing the skills they acquired during the camp sessions.  Past productions have included kid-friendly versions of The Three Musketeers, Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes, and even Macbeth!

Tuition is $475.00 per session.  After-care until 5:30 is available for an additional charge.

Our 2009 summer camp sessions filled up well in advance, so reserve your child’s place early!

• Send us the enrollment form with tuition payment to reserve your child’s spot.  (Cancellation/refund policies are described on the form.)
• This release form must also be signed before the first day of camp—you can include it with the enrollment/payment form if you wish.

Says Barbara: “This gem of a theater was my first connection to Alameda … I loved it then and still do.”  Barbara should know—as a retired caterer and owner of Daisy’s on Park Street, she remembers coming to the theater with her grandmother!

7 out of the first 9 performances either sold out or were within a few seats of selling out, but we’ve added Thursday night shows in 2010, and are even promoting awareness of them by releasing additional Goldstar 1/2 price tickets for those shows.  Don’t miss director Michael Ryken’s production of this classic, delivered, as Jarrett writes, “so very well by such a hard working and motivated cast.”

Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes was sold into slavery, excommunicated from the Church, imprisoned in debtors’ jail, and died poor.  Yet his alter ego Don Quixote de la Mancha sees only the best in everyone and pursues the loftiest ideals, “no matter how hopeless, no matter how far.”  Initially ridiculed as an idealistic fool, Quixote eventually transforms those around him, helping them see the world “not as it is, but as it ought to be.” The show’s signature song The Impossible Dream, an anthem for anyone on a quest of their own, makes this story as powerful today as it was in Cervantes’ time.
