Auditions
Who can perform in Altarena productions? Altarena Playhouse holds open auditions for all of our productions. Altarena casts non-AEA actors.
Are actors compensated? Actors work as volunteers, though a modest volunteer stipend is provided to cover basic costs such as transportation. Actors also receive some complimentary tickets. The stipend amount is usually listed with each audition notice.
What about directors, music directors, musicians, etc.? We usually hire freelancers for these artistic staff positions and pay them a modest stipend. Available positions are advertised the same way as auditions, described below.
When are auditions held? Auditions are usually held 3-4 months prior to the show’s opening date. Specific dates, places and times are listed in each show’s audition notice.
How can I be notified of audition calls? You can sign up for our Audition Announce Email List and receive email when we post a new audition call or job listing. We never rent, sell or share our email list with anyone.
Are appointments required? It depends on the specific audition call. If appointments are required, the audition call includes the necessary contact information for making an appointment, as well as contact information for getting answers to other questions about the audition.
Where do you post audition notices? Audition notices appear on the main page of our Web site (see a listing of all recent audition notices) as well as in Theatre Bay Area’s Callboard magazine and on their web site.
Is there a phone number I can call for audition information? Not at this time. All audition information is disseminated via our website, our audition email list, and Theatre Bay Area’s Callboard and website.
Where and when are rehearsals held? Most rehearsals are held weeknights and weekend days at the Altarena Playhouse in Alameda. A few rehearsals may have to be held offsite if the theater is in use. The specific rehearsal schedule is established by the director of each show.
